A Day in the Life: How We Care for Our Elephants

A mahout and guests feeding an elephant fresh greens in Jaipur, Rajasthan

Long before any guest arrives for an elephant ride or a royal experience in Jaipur, the day for our elephants has already begun. Welfare is not a policy we point to; it is the quiet routine that shapes every morning, and it is the reason our elephants remain calm, healthy and gentle year after year.

The morning starts with a thorough health check. Each elephant is greeted by the mahout who knows it best, and together they inspect skin, feet, eyes and appetite. These daily observations let us catch anything unusual early, long before it could become a concern, and they deepen the bond of trust between animal and caretaker.

Food fills a remarkable share of the day. An adult elephant eats for many hours, so we provide a steady, varied diet of green fodder, seasonal fruit and supplements measured to each animal's needs. Fresh water is always within reach, and mealtimes are unhurried, allowing the elephants to graze the way they naturally would.

Bathing is a favourite ritual for elephants and mahouts alike. Cool water soothes the skin, keeps it healthy in the Rajasthan heat, and clearly delights the elephants, who splash and rumble with obvious contentment. It is also a moment of play and connection that we would never trade for anything.

Rest is treated as seriously as work. We cap daily activity, avoid the hottest hours entirely, and build in generous stretches of shade, quiet and companionship. Elephants are deeply social, so time spent simply being together, away from any schedule, is a genuine part of their wellbeing.

When guests meet our elephants, they are meeting animals that are cared for first and admired second. We believe the two go hand in hand, and that a truly royal elephant experience in Jaipur — whether a heritage ride, a wedding baraat or a game of polo — is only possible when the elephant at its heart is genuinely thriving.
